THE HIDDEN BEAUTIES OF CUSCO

Although Cusco has earned its fame due to the wealth of historical sites and attractions that lure tourists from all over the world, there is much more to this south eastern region of Peru. Cusco is crossed by the Andes mountain range, lending its geography with snowcapped peaks. However, the terrain also dips in altitude, lower and lower, flanking the banks of the Urubamba river. Thus, these changes in height do create some dramatic shifts in flora and fauna, making distinct ecosystems along the diverse areas of Cusco.

While the highest reaches at Cusco boast impressive mountain peaks, the lower altitudes display an astounding treshold to the unending jungle. The mountain jungle, or cloud forest is the start of an adventure filled with foliage-laden mountain sides, sub- Tropical climate, and kaleidoscopic flora at its best.

Dwellers of Cusco have a close knit relationship with their land, living in harmony with their environment. A trek throughout the many trails in Cusco will take you across coffee plantations, ancient ruins, and actual villagers taking in agricultural tasks, using methods which have been passed generation to generation.

A trip to the lesser explored areas of Cusco is a way for travellers to absorb the primal essence of what Cusco really meant to its dwellers in the first place. The hidden beauty of Cusco relies on the Knowledge of having such a close relationship with Mother Earth.

Having learnt this, visitors will be ready for a more deep understanding of what the Inca culture was all about. At Sumaq Hotel, the staff is very conscious of this truth.
