Leisure and activities

After a real challenge? Or on the hunt for unforgettable experiences? Machu Picchu is the start of a journey that will last a lifetime! Not only is it a popular destination in Peru, but it also stirs a multitude of emotions with its incomparable scenery.

Enter the site and a magical picture rises in front of you. The world-famous mountain Wayna Picchu is welcoming you. Its name, in the ancient Quechua language, means young peaks. It is the smallest of the two summits located at the Imperial city.

Wayna Picchu can only be climbed by 400 visitors a day. You need between 45 minutes to 90 minutes to reach the summit, 500 meters higher than your original starting point. However, to get there you have to climb steep stairways flanking the side of a precipice, a challenge that’s not suitable for the faint-hearted. Once you get to the top, you’ll have a feeling of freedom, that you’re on top of the world and can almost touch the sky. The Sacred City sits at your feet, revealing the splendid shape of a condor, one of the sacred animals from the Inca cosmology. Further on the summit, other mysteries are yours to discover, such as caves where mummies might have found their final resting place. Let your spirit float while the wind tickles your skin, before attacking the sheer cliffs on your way down once again.

After the thrills of your day, enjoy a well-deserved rest in a delightfully comfy bed with alpaca covers at Sumaq Hotel. Located on the doorstep of Machu Picchu, this sustainable lodge is the ideal base, and offers all the services you might need following a hard day’s hike in the Andes. From preparing a traditional meal at the in-house cooking class to relaxing in a sumptuous suite, Sumaq offers a wide range of activities. The Spa, one of Sumaq’s most alluring facilities, promises a treatment fit for world-class travelers.
